Plot of "Picture Bride"
Picture Bride is the story of a 16 year
old Japanese girl who travels to Hawaii in 1918
to become the mail order bride of a man she has never met. The two have
exchanged letters and photographs, but she does
not realize the photos she has seen are not very recent.
She is bitterly disappointed when she realizes her husband
is 20 years older then the photograph he sent her,
and that she marrying into a hard life as a plantation worker.
Promotional Image Controversy
The image on the right was originally used to promote the movie
when it was released, but it's use was controversial because
many people, including the director, did not approve of using
sex to promote "Picture Bride" because sexuality as not a theme
in the movie.
