Train Transportation in Hawaii
At one time, seven railroad companies
operated on four of the Hawaiian islands,
with most of them serving 47 sugar plantations.
Trains are no longer used for transportation in
Hawaii, but you can still ride a Hawaiian train
on the islands of Oahu and Maui.
Sugar Cane Train
Visitors to the island of Maui can take a six mile ride
on a steam engine train from the Kaanapali Beach
area to the old whaling town of Lahaina.
Oahu Railway Train
Visitors to the island of Oahu can
take a six mile narrated train ride
which begins in Ewa, in West Oahu.
This stretch of train track is included
on the State and National Registers of
Historic Sites.
Hawaiian Railway Society
An organization formed in 1970 to save what
remained of Hawaii's railroad history.
