Introduction to Hilo Airport
General information and facts about the Honolulu International Airport (HNL),
which is located on the south shore of the island of Oahu, just west of
Pearl Harbor.
Hilo International Airport is located on the east side of the Big Island
of Hawaii. The airport is owned and operated by the State of Hawaii, Department
of Transportation, Airports Division.
The airport occupies 1,391 acres of land about two miles east of Hilo. The
airport was previously known as General Lyman Field until 1989.
The airport’s primary runway, 8-26, is 9,800 feet long. The secondary runway,
3-21, is 5,600 feet long and is used mainly for general aviation operations.
Hilo International is served by the two Interisland carriers - Aloha Airlines
and Hawaiian Airlines. It also has general aviation operations.
The airport averages more than 300 arrivals and departures daily.
Nearly 1.6 million passengers arrive and depart from ITO annually.
As growth and tourism have occurred in Kona, air traffic through
Hilo has decreased.
