Fatal Helicopter Crashes in Hawaii
1999 - March 2007
A timeline of civilian helicopter crashes in Hawaii between 1999 and
March 2007 that resulted in the deaths of one or more people.
Includes crashes of Hawaii helicopter tours, personal helicopter
flights, helicopter material transport flights,
and student training flights. Note that military helicopter
crashes are not included.
2007
2007 March 11 (Kauai)
One person was killed and three people were
seriously injured in a helicopter crash Sunday,
March 11, 2007 on the island of Kauai. The pilot
was flying on Kauai's north shore about 1:00 p.m. when he heard a
loud bang and lost control of the helicopter.
The Hughes 500 helicopter was taking four passengers
on a tour operated by Smoky Mountain Helicopters.
The aircraft struck some trees with its main rotar
blade.
2007 March 8 (Kauai)
Four people were killed and three were seriously injured
when a Heli USA tour helicopter made a mid-afternoon,
clear weather crash landing on grass along the Princeville Airport runway.

2005 December 25 (Kauai)
On December 25, 2005 a tour helicopter operated by
Smokey Mountain Helicopters, doing business as
Inter-Island Helicopters, crashed near Lihue on
the island of Kauai.

2005 September 23 (Kauai)
On September 23, 2005 a tour helicopter operated by
Heli USA Airways crashed off the coast at Kee Beach
at Kailiu Point near the town of Haena.

2004 September 24 (Kauai)
On September 24, 2004 a tour helicopter operated by
Bali Hai Helicopters crashed northeast of Port
Allen Airport on the south coast of Kauai.

2003 July 23 (Kauai)
On July 23, 2003 a helicopter tour operated by Jack Harter
Helicopters crashed at Waialae Crater on the island of Kauai.

2003 June 15 (Big Island)
On June 15, 2003 a helicopter tour operated by K & S
Helicopters, doing business as Paradise Tour Helicopters,
crashed in a Lava field on the Pulama Pali in the Volcanoes National Park
on the Big island of Hawaii.

2003 May 22 (Kahoolawe)
On May 22, 2003 a transport helicopter operated
by Pacific Helicopter tours crashed while it
was transporting material to that island.

2000 July 21 (Maui)
On July 21, 2000 a helicopter operated by
Helicopter Consultants of Maui, doing business
as Blue Hawaiian Helicopters, crashed in the
mountainous terrain around the Iao Valley.

1998 June 25 (Kauai)
On June 25, 1998 a helicopter tour operated by
Ohana Helicopter Tours crashed in the steep
mountainous terrain near Mount Waialeale on the
island of Kauai.

1997 May 18 (Big Island)
On May 18, 1997 a company helicopter traveling
from Kona to Hilo crashed 21 miles northwest of Hilo.

On May 10, 1997 a helicopter crashed on the Big Island
of Hawaii in Kona near Puako.

crashed in Lihue on the island of Kauai.

1995 July 21 (Oahu)
On July 21, 1995 a rescue helicopter crashed
near Hauula on the island of Oahu in Hawaii.

1994 July 14 (Kauai)
On July 14, 1994 a helicopter tour out of Lihue, operated by Papillon Hawaiian
Helicopters, crashed.

On April 18, 1994 a helicopter operated by Smoky Mountain
Helicopters, doing business as Inter-Island Helicopters,
crashed on the island of Kauai, 7 miles northeast of Hanapepe
below Manawaupuna Falls.

1993 August 10 (Between Lanai and Oahu)
On August 10, 1993 a helicopter crashed into the ocean
between Lanai and Oahu, eight miles southeast of Honolulu.
It was a personal scuba diving flight, not a
commercially operated helicopter tour.
