The controversy over the launch of the new Hawaii Superferry continued to grow in September of 2007. Environmentalists asked for a temporary restraining order barring the ferry from operating on Kauai and the U.S. Coastguard outlined new emergency security zones around Kauai, Maui, and Oahu to prevent protesters from blocking the ferry.

The first Hawaii superferry ship underwent five days of sea trials in April of 2007 and it was christened in Alabama later that month. The ferry was scheduled to depart for Hawaii in May of 2007.
