Sites on the Waikiki Historic Trail
Oahu, Hawaii

A guide to each of the sites on the Waikiki Historic Trail. Includes photos of most of the surfboard markers, statues, monuments, historic buildings, and other sites on the trail. Select each site below to view , historical information, photos, and directions that will allow you to plan your own self-guided walking tour of the Waikiki Historic Trail.



MARKER 1: The Beaches of Waikiki
The first marker on the Waikiki Historic Trail is located across the street from the Honolulu Zoo near the spot where Kalakaua and Monsarrat Avenues come together. It has photos and historic information about San Souci Beach, Queens Surf Beach, the Kapiolani Beach Park, the Outrigger Canoe Club, and the Waikiki Memorial Natatorium.

MARKER 2: Waikiki and Surfing

The second marker on the trail is called "Waikiki", it is located on Kalakaua Avenue, and it has photos and information about the history of surfing in Waikiki.


MARKER 3: Queen Liliuokalani Residence
Marker 3 on the Waikiki Historic Trail is located on the Diamond Head end and Waikiki side of the Ala Wai Canal, near the intersection of Ala Wai Boulevard and Kapahulu Avenue. It marks the former location of one of Queen Liliuokalani's homes.

MARKER 4: Prince Jonah Kuhio
Prince Jonah Kuhio Marker
There is both a statue of Prince Kuhio and a surfboard marker honoring Prince Kuhio at this historic site on Kuhio Beach. The marker has photographs of the prince and information about his life and accomplishments. The marker is located on Kalakaua Avenue on Kuhio Beach.


MARKER 5: Duke Kahanamoku Statue
There is no surfboard marker at this historic site on Kuhio Beach, but there is a very famous statue of legendary surfer and Olympic swimming champion Duke Kahanamoku. The statue is located on Kalakaua Avenue east of the Waikiki Police Station. (The Waikiki Police Substation is at 2425 Kalakaua Avenue. That building was officially named the "Duke Paoa Kahanamoku Building" on August 24, 2001. Duke Kahanamoku was a Sheriff of the city and county of Honolulu from 1934 to 1960.)

MARKER 6: Kapaemahu Healing Stones

This ancient historic site is located on Kalakaua Avenue, near the surfboard racks, between the Duke Kahanamoku statue and the Waikiki Police Station.. There is no surfboard marker here because the stones are their own historic marker. (police station is at 2425 Kalakaua Avenue)


MARKER 7: King Kalakaua Residence at Ulunia
Marker #7 on the Waikiki Historic Trail is located on Ulunia Street near the main entrance to the King's Alley Shopping Center. It marks the former site of King Kalakaua's residence.

MARKER 8: Ainahau Estate and Princess Kaiulani
Moana Hotel
Site 8 on the trail mark's the former location of the Aianhau estate of Princess Kaiulani and her mother Princess Likelike. It is located in the Waikiki point of the Triangle Park at Kuhio Avenue and Kaiulani Avenue that also has a beautiful bronze statue of Princess Kaiulani.


MARKER 9: King Lunalilo's Estate
This casual open air shopping center on Kalakaua Avenue in the center of Waikiki is in an area known as Kalauakau where King William Lunalilo once had a summer home. He left his home and property to Queen Emma. The surfboard marker for this site is located in front of the Banyan Tree fountain not far from the main entrance to the marketplace.

MARKER 10: Moana Hotel

There is no surfboard at site #10 on the Waikiki Historic Trail because the historic marker is the Moana Hotel itself. When the Moana Hotel was built in 1901 it was the first luxury hotel and the tallest building in Hawaii.


MARKER 11: Apuakehau Stream and Waikiki Beach Boys
This marker is located on the beach side of the patio in front of the downstairs Duke's Restaurant and the upstairs Chuck's Steak House. Both restaurants are located on the beach in the Outrigger Waikiki Reef Hotel.

MARKER 12: Helumoa and Royal Hawaiian Hotel

This marker is located in the triangle park at Kalakaua and Beach Walk and it marks the location of the Helumoa Coconut Grove and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.


MARKER 13: Kawehewehe Healing Waters
Marker #13 on the Waikiki Historic Trail is located on the beach on the Diamond Head side of the Shore Bird Restaurant in the Outrigger Reef on the Beach Hotel.


MARKER 14: Afong Villa and Hawaii Army Museum

Marker number 14 on the Waikiki Historic Trail tells the story of Chun Afong, who arrived in Honolulu in 1849 and became Hawaii's first Chinese millionaire. His home sat on the site now occupied by the United States Army Museum in Fort DeRussy Park.


MARKER 15: Kawehewehe Healing Waters
Marker #15 on the Waikiki Historic Trail is located on ocean side of Kalia Road between the Hale Koa Hotel and the Hawaii Army Museum. It is a little hard to spot if you are walking toward the museum because it blends in nicely with its surroundings. You can see it more easily when you are walking from the museum toward the hotel. It is located in the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street.


MARKER 16: Duke Kahanamoku Beach and Paoa Park

Marker #16 on the Waikiki Historic Trail is located in a grassy area next to the Atlantis Submarine ticket window at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort. It has information about Duke Kahanamoku and the Paoa family estate.


MARKER 17: Piinaio Stream and Kalia Bay
Marker #17 on the Waikiki Historic Trail is located on the patio of the Ilikai Hotel, on the Diamond Head end of the walkway fronting the Yacht Harbor.

MARKER 18: Waikiki Duck Ponds and Ala Moana

Marker #18 on the Waikiki Historic Trail is located at the entrance to Ala Moana Park on the Diamond Head side of the park.


MARKER 19: Ala Wai Canal
Marker #19 on the Waikiki Historic Trail is located in the Ala Moana area, next to the Hawaii Convention Center, on the banks of the Ala Wai Canal.

MARKER 20: Fort DeRussy

Marker 20 on the Waikiki Historic Trail is located in Fort DeRussy Park on the Ala Moana end of Waikiki, near the intersection of Ala Moana Avenue and Kalakaua Avenue..

MARKER 21: King Kalakaua Statue
The marker for site 21 on the Waikiki Historic Trail is a bronze statue of King David Kalakaua. It is located on the Ala Moana end of Kalakaua Avenue.

MARKER 22: Story of Kalia
Story of Kalia - Marker 22
Marker 22 is located at the corner of Ala Moana Boulevard and Kalia Road, behind the bronze hula dancer statues at the main entrance to the Hilton Hawiian village Resort.


MARKER 23: Rainbow Tower and Hilton Lagoon
I have not yet found or photographed Marker #23 on the Waikiki Historic Trail.
