Duke Kahanamoku Statue
Waikiki Historic Trail Marker 5

Marker number 5 on the Waikiki Historic Trail is a statue of surfer and Olympic swimming champion Duke Kahanamoku standing in front of a surfboard.

About Duke Kahanamoku
Duke Kahanamoku became a Hawaiian and United States hero when he won three gold medals and two silver medals in the Olympics he won one gold and one silver medal at the 1912 Olympics, in Stockholm, two gold medals at the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp, and a silver medal at the 1924 Olympics in Paris. Three of his Olymoic medals were won in the 100 meter freestyle swimming event and two were won in the 4x200 meter freestyle relay. Duke Kahanamoku was born on August 24, 1980 and he died of a heart attack on January 22, 1968. In 1984 he was inducted into the United States Olympic Committee Hall of Fame.

About the Duke Kahanamoku Statue
After Duke Kahanamoku died his wife led an effort to have a statue created in his image and placed on Waikiki Beach. In 1990 her efforts were rewarded when a nine foot statue of Duke Kahanamoku with outstretched arms was dedicated in Kuhio Beach Park. The world famous Duke Kahanamoku statue was created by sculptor Jan Gordon Fisher who also created the Waikiki Princess Kaiulani Statue

The Duke Kahanamoku statue is located on Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki, inside Kuhio Beach Park and across the street from the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Hotel.
