Waikiki Historic Trail Marker 4

There is both a statue of Prince Kuhio and a surfboard marker honoring Prince Kuhio at this historic site on Kuhio Beach.

Description of Marker 4
This marker has photos of Prince Jonah Kuhio and it tells the story of how the prince was born on the island of Kauai and was adopted by his aunt, the future Queen Kapiolani, and her husband, the future King David Kalakaua when his parents died. When David Kalakaua became king he made Kuhio a prince. After the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy Prince Kuhio attempted to overthrow the new Republic of Hawaii and for that he spent a year in prison. six years after his release he was elected as the territorial delegate to the United States Congress, a position he held for 20 years.

Location of Marker 4
The 4th marker on the Waikiki Historic Trail is located on the ocean side of Kalakaua Avenue, on Kuhio Beach, on the downtown Waikiki side of Kapahulu Boulevard and the Kapahulu Groin.
