USS Arizona Memorial

A memorial to the USS Arizona, a battleship that
was sunk during the Japanese attack on
December 7, 1941, during which more then 2000
military and civilian lives were lost.
The deck of the ship is now 6 feet underwater,
and you can see oil oozing up out of the water.
The memorial is a 184 foot white structure
the same length as the underwater ship. The
memorial was designed by German architect
Alfred Pries. the ship's bell is inside the
memorial, and the names of the dead are carved
in a stone memorial.
The USS Arizona Memorial Visitor's Center is open
7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. seven days a week except on
New Year's day and Christmas day. Tours are given
every 15 minutes between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Entry and boat transportation to the USS Memorial is
free, but tickets are handed out on a first-come first-serve
basis, and can be gone by noon. Note that
handbags, waist packs, backpacks, baby backpacks,
strollers, and any other item that offers concealment
are not allowed on the memorial, although cameras are permitted.
USS Arizona Memorial tours begin with a brief introduction,
a 20 minute film on the Pearl Harbor attack, followed by
a boat trip to the memorial. The entire tour, including
the introduction and the film, takes
approximately 75 minutes, but waiting times for a tour
can be longer then 2 hours.
