Kuhio Beach Surfboard Lockers
Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii

The City and County of Honolulu maintains and rents nearly 600 surfboard racks and storage lockers in Kuhio Beach Park, behind the Duke Paoa Kahanamoku Building that houses the Waikiki Substation of the Honolulu Police Department. That building and the surfboard lockers are located at 2405 Kalakaua Avenue across the street from the Hyatt Regency Hotel and next door to the historic Moana Hotel.

In 2006 the Honolulu City Council made significant changes to the Kuhio Beach Park surfboard locker rental program. The city felt there were many abuses of and problems with the existing system including lack of proper record keeping of lockers rented and revenues received, the fact that no one on the locker waiting list actually received a locker between 2002 and 2006, the fact that the area surrounding the surfboard lockers had become run down, and also that many of the lockers, which the city was renting for $15 per month, were being sub-rented for up to $50 a week by people making a nice profit by renting and sub-rented dozens of the city-owned lockers.

Honolulu Bill 67, signed into law on December 1, 2006, gave the Honolulu Department of Enterprise Services responsibility for properly maintaining the rental waiting list, establishing a more equitable rental system, improving the physical appearance of the lockers, and making sure individuals were only allowed to rent one locker at a time. It was expected that the Department of Enterprise Services would be able to increase city income from locker rentals from about $60,000 a year to more then $200,000 per year.
