National Wildlife Refuges on Oahu

Articles and information about United States national wildlife refuges on the island of Oahu in Hawaii.

Eighty percent of Hawaii's population lives on the island of Oahu, but the state and the nation have still managed to set aside three areas as national wildlife refuges to protect Hawaii's endangered waterbirds. Endangered birds on Oahu include the Hawaiian Stilt, the Hawaiian Moorhen, the Koloa, and others.

James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge
James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge This national wildlife refuge is located on the lush windward side of the island of Oahu. It was established in 1976, when the Kahuku Sugar Mill closed down, and the surrounding waterbird habitat was in danger of disappearing.

Pearl Harbor National Wildlife Refuge
This national wildlife refuge was established on the south shore of Oahu in 1972, and it has two parts: The 37 acre Honouliuli section borders the West Loch of Pearl Harbor, and the 25 acre Waiawa section borders the Middle Loch and the section of Pearl Harbor where the USS Arizona Memorial and USS Missouri Battleship are located.
