History of the Kapahulu Groin
The Kapahulu Groin was built by James W. Glover Ltd as part of a Waikiki Beach improvement project that was completed in July of 1951. It is an extension of a storm drain that runs under Kapahulu Avenue. The Kapahulu Groin was built on the spot where the Kuekaunahi Stream use to flow into the sea after crossing the former swamp area that is now Kapahulu Boulevard. Another part of the 1950's Waikiki Beach Improvement Project included bringing more then 100,000 cubic yards of sand from Waimanalo Beach and the Kaneohe Naval Air Station to create man-made beaches on both sides of the Kapahulu Groin. A low retaining wall was also built on the Diamond Head side of the Groin.
