Historic Buildings on Oahu

A guide to historic buildings on the island of Oahu in Hawaii.

Aloha Tower
A 10 story building on the edge of Honolulu Harbor that was constructed in 1926. For more then 40 years this was an important landmark that greeted tourists who arrived in Hawaii by boat. that changed somewhat when all of the skyscrapers were built in Honolulu and Waikiki, but the Aloha Tower is still an important historic landmark. Public tours are available.

Iolani Palace

Kakaako Pumping Station
The Kakaako Pumping Station was built in 1900 and it was Honolulu's first waste disposal facility. The blue stone building with the green tile roof was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Kawaiahao Church
This church was build in the late 1830's or early 1840's, and it is sometimes referred to as the "Westminster Abbey of Hawaii". Free tours are available Monday through riday and there are church services on Sunday at 8 and 10:30 am and on Wednesdays at 6 pm. The Sunday 10:30 service is in the Hawaiian language.

Mission Houses Museum
Three restored houses that preserve elements of Hawaii's 19th century missionary society. Located in downtown Honolulu at King Street and Kawaiaha'o Street

Shangri-La
Tours of the 1937 Honolulu home of Doris Duke are available, but somtimes must be booked months in advance.
