Agnes' Portuguese Bake Shop
This Portuguese bakery in Kailua on the eastern
windward side of Oahu specializes in baked goods
such as hot fried malasadas, sweet bread, potato bread, and
soups such as Portuguese bean soup and caldo verde soup.
The bakery also carries a full line of non-Portuese
baked goods including one of their specialties, Russian
tea cakes with raspberry filling.
Founded by Agnes and Tommy Wright more then 30 years ago.

Cafe Laufer
This Kaimuki area European style bakery and coffee shop is known for
its delicious desserts, including specialties such
as fruit flan, chocolate charlotte russe, peach melba, pears helen,
apple tart, linzer tortes, and eclairs. Their coffee shop
serves soups, sandwiches on a variety of breads, fruit plates,
and gourmet salads. Cafe Laufer is owned by Marlies von Laufer, originally from
Germany, and Cyrus Goo.

Champion Malasadas
Joc Miw founded this Honolulu bakery
in 1983, at its original location on North King Street.
In June of 2000 it moved to it's current McCully area
location. Their specialty is exceptionally
light malasadas, but they are also popular for their
hot crossed buns, which are sold year-round, and their
orange, lemon, guava, and chocolate chiffon cakes.

Dee Lite Bakery
Herbert and Sue Matsuba opened their first Dee-Lite
Bakery on Mokauea Street in 1959, and today the
bakery chain has many locations in Hawaii.
Their specialty chiffon cakes in tropical flavors
such as guava, coconut, passion fruit, and lime.
Herbert Matsuba retired in 1990, and sold his
bakery chain to Saint-Germain America.

Kaneohe Bakery

I like to stop at this bakery on Kamehameha Highway in
Kaneohe when I'm driving around the island.
They have very nice Hawaiian-style bread pudding
made with Portuguese sweet bread and many other delicious
baked goods (45-1026 Kamehameha Highway, Kaneohe,

Leonard's Bakery
Frank Leonard Rego and his wife Margaret opened Leonard's Bakery
in 1952, and since then it has become one of the most
well-known Portuguese bakeries in Hawaii. They sell many
Portuguese and non-Portuguese baked goods, but their specialty
is malasadas that are served coated with plain sugar or
cinnamon sugar. Leonard's now sells malasadas puffs, which are
filled with custard, guava paste, chocolate, or haupia, but
the original, unfilled malasadas are still the best. When you
are driving around the island of Oahu,
you will probably see red and white striped Leonard's malasadas wagons parked
on the side of the road, where you can buy piping-hot, freshly made malasadas.
Frank Rego died in 1980, and the shop is
now run by his son, Frank Leonard Rego, Jr.

Liliha Bakery

This popular bakery was founded by
Roy and Koo Takakuwa in 1950, and at that time
it really was located on Liliha Street. It was
moved to its current larger location in 1961.
They are most famous for their Coco Puffs - a cream
puff filled with chocolate pudding and topped with
butter icing - and their sweet buns stuffed with
bean paste (bean anpan). There is also a coffee shop
in the bakery that is open 24 hours a day.

Love's Bakery
Daiichiya-Love's Bakery of Hawaii is a large, wholesale bakery
and distributor of freshly baked bread, buns, donuts,
and pies. Their bakery is located on the island of Oahu,
but their baked goods are delivered daily to Maui, Kauai,
Molokai, and the Big Island of Hawaii. Love's Bakery also
has several retail bakery thrift shops on Oahu, Maui,
Kauai, and the Big Island.
Mary Catherine's Bakery

The specialty of this European style bakery is delicious and
nicely textured made-to-order cakes, that can
be creatively decorated. They are also popular
for their chocolate decadence and carrot cakes, and
their large variety of baked goods.

Napolean's Bakery
This bakery is associated with the popular Zippy's chain
of family restaurants and one of their specialties is
the "napple" or fried apple pie. These pies actually come
in three flavors: The apple has a single cut
in the crust, the coconut has two cuts, and the cherry
has three cuts. Sometimes other flavors are available, including chocolate,
and these are usually folded into rectangles instead of triangles.
Napolean's Bakery was founded in 1983 by Zippy's owners
Francis and Charles Higa. The bakery has
more then 20 locations in Hawaii.
Ted's Bakery

This combination bakery and deli on the north shore of Oahu
is a popular spot for breakfast and lunch, but their
specialty is pies. Their trademark pie is a two layer
chocolate coconut pie, and they also have pies
in many other flavors. Ted's Bakery is owned by brothers
Ted and Glenn Nakamura.
