DFS Galleria Aquarium
Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii

This fascinating, two-story, walk-through aquarium, filled with manta rays, sharks, and colorful tropical fish, was dismantled and removed from the DFS Galleria Waikiki in April of 2007.

DFS Galleria Aquarium

The aquarium inside the DFS Galleria Waikiki duty free shopping center was known as "The Tube" because people could walk through a glass tube in the aquarium and view rays and sharks swimming above them and on all sides. The DFS Galleria Aquarium could also be viewed from outside the duty free shop by pedestrians passing by on Kalakaua Avenue.

Duty Free Shops of Hawaii (DFS Hawaii) installed the 65,000 gallon aquarium in the DFS Galleria Waikiki in 2001 as part of a $65 million expansion project. Some sources say the aquarium was removed in April of 2007 because DFS Hawaii did not feel the aquarium fit in with the new luxury boutique image they wanted to project. Other sources say the aquarium became too expensive for DFS Hawaii to maintain after their sales started dropping due to a decline in the number of Japanese tourists visiting Hawaii. At one time, about 95% of the customers shopping at the DFS Galleria Waikiki were Japanese.
