The Peace Bell at the Byodo Temple
Kahoehe, Oahu, Hawaii

The sacred bell (bon-sho) at the Byodo-in Temple in Hawaii is sometimes called a peace bell. The bell and the structure around the bell are very similar to those at the original Byodo-in Temple in Uji Japan. It is customery to ring the bell before entering the temple, using a soft wooden log called a shu-moku. The tone of the bell is intended to invoke an atmosphere of deep calm and peace.
