Golden Buddha at the Byodo-In
Oahu, Hawaii

This golden Buddha sits inside the Japanese Byodo-In Temple on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. The Buddha itself is nine feet tall, and the entire display, including the stand, the Buddha, and the filigree screen, are eighteen feet tall. This statue is an Amida Buddha sitting in the lotus position. Amida means "immeasurable life and light." The screen behind the Buddah has carvings of angels singing and playing musical instruments.

The Buddha at Oahu's Byodo-In Temple is an original work of art carved out of wood by Japanese sculptor Masuzo Inui, in the style of Jocho, a master carver who made a smaller Buddha for the original Byodo-In Temple in Uji Japan more then 1000 years ago. After this Buddha was carved out of wood, it was covered with cloth, the cloth was painted with gold lacquer, and the lacquer was covered with gold leaf.
