Barbers Point Naval Air Station
Information about the Barbers Point Naval Air Station on the
south shore of the island
of Oahu in Hawaii. Note that Barber's Point NAS was closed in 1993.
The Barbers Point Naval Air Station was established
in 1942 on a point on the south side of the island
of Oahu in Hawaii, just west of the town of Ewa.
The air station was named for Henry Barber, master
of the Arthur, a 100 foot British brigantine that ran
aground on Oahu during a storm in 1796. The base
was a hub of activity during the World War II battle
in the Pacific.
In 1993 the Naval Air Station at
Barbers Point was closed, and the site is now used for the
Kalaeloa Airport for general aviation, a
Coast Guard Station, and the home of several
units of the
Hawaii National Guard. When the Navy closed
their base, they retained 1100 acres for military use
and turned 2150 acres over to Hawaii. Those 2150 acres
are now known as the Kalaeloa Community Development District.
