Art Museums on Oahu
A guide to art museums on the island of Oahu
in Hawaii, including the Honolulu Academy of Arts,
the Honolulu Contemporary Art Museum, an art
museum at the University of Hawaii, and more.
Contemporary Museum Honolulu
A modern art museem with two Honolulu locations:
one in historic Spalding House and one
at First Hawaiian Center. The Spalding
House location also has a cafe, a shop,
and 3.5 acres of sculpture and meditation gardens,
Hawaii State Art Museum
An exhibition of mostly contemporary art that reflects
Hawaii's ethnic and cultural history. The museum
opened in 2002 and it is housed in an 1872 building
that was the original home of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
Honolulu Academy of Arts
This museum and art academy has a large permanent
collection of international art, including everything
from Renaissance paintings to traditional artworks
from the Pacific, the Americas, and Africa.
The Pavilion Cafe is open for lunch, and the
academy also hosts special events such as concerts
and film screenings.
Shangri La
The former Honolulu home of heiress Doris Duke
was built in 1937, and it is an architecturally
impressive structure that has a fine
collection of Islamic art. Tours are popular
and sometimes must be booked months in advance.
