When King Kamehameha IV died,his older bother Lot
became King Kamehameha V.
He replaced the Hawaiian constitution with one
that game him more power, and he improved the
balance of trade in Hawaii. He also increased
the power of foreigners in Hawaii.
He was so overweight that by the end of his life
he could not leave the palace. he never married,
but at one time he was engaged to Princess Bernice
Pauahi, the last descendent of King Kamehameha I,
but she married businessman Charles Bishop instead.
Before King Kamehameha V died, he offered the throne to
Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, who did not accept it
because she did not want to become queen.
King Kamehameha V died on December 11, 1872. He was
the last king of the Kamehameha dynasty.
