King Kamehameha II was the second son of Kamehameha the Great and Queen Keopuolani.
He was 11 years younger then King Liholiho.
He became king in 1925 at age 11,after his brother Liholiho (king Kamehame II)
died of meales in England.
Queen Kaahumano was Kamehameha III's regent until her
death in 1832. Under her influence, Kamehame II became a Christian
and banned many traditional Hawaiian beliefs, customs and practices,
including the hula.
In 1939 Kamehameha II guaranteed religious freedom
to the people of Hawaii, and he transformed Hawaii
into a constitutional monarchy. By 1843, France, England,
and the United States recognized Hawaii as an independent nation.
By this time, Hawaii was the center of the whaling industry.
Commercial production of sugar cane began in Hawaii in 1935,
and it became even more important to Hawaii when whaling declined
in the 1860's.
Kamehameha III offered to place his islands under
Queen Victoria's protection, but she did not accept
for political reasons. In the 1840's the United
States tried to Annex Hawaii, but Kamehameha III prevented
it from happening.
