He became King at the age of 22 after his father, King Kamehameha I died in 1819. His stepmother Queen Kaahumanu was considered to be the power behind the throne. The first Christian missionaries came to Hawaii not long after King kamehameha I died, Queen Kaahumanu converted to their faith but Kamehameha II did not.

Liholiho and his wife both died after contracted the measles while visiting England in 1924. He was only king for 5 years. Their bodies were returned to Hawai ifor Burial.
