King Kamehameha Statue in Washington DC
The golden King Kamehameha statue that sits in front of the
Judiciary Building in historic downtown Honolulu is the most
photographed attraction in Hawaii but many people do not know
there are identical statues in Washington DC and on the Big Island.
King Kamehameha in the National Statuary Hall
This statue of King Kamehameha the Great sits
in the National Statuary Hall inside the United States
Capitol Building in Washington DC. It was made from molds
of the King Kamehameha statue that sits in front of
the Judiciary Building in historic downtown Honolulu.
This King Kamehameha statue was dedicated in a ceremony
inside the United States Capitol Building Rotunda on
April 15, 1969. The statue and its solid granite base
weigh more then six tons, making it one of the heaviest
objects in the statuary hall. Every year on June 11,
which is King Kamehameha Day in Hawaii, the statue is
draped with flower leis in a ceremony featuring hula
dancers and Hawaiians portraying King Kamehameha and
his favorite wife Kaahumanu.
Two National Hall Statues Representing Hawaii
There are two statues representing Hawaii in
the National Statuary Hall collection,
this statue of King Kamehameha the Great and
a statue of Father Damien that was created by
Marisol Escobar. The Kamehameha statue is located
inside the Statuary Hall and the Father Damien statue
is located in the house connecting corridor on the
first floor of the capitol.
About the National Statuary Hall
The National Statuary Hall was created by the United
States Congress on July 2, 1864. It is located
in a large, two-story, semicircular chamber of the
United States Capitol Building that was
used as a second meeting place for the House
of Representatives for more then 50 years. It
includes 100 statues, two per state, that are either
located inside the hall or in the hallways nearby.
