Birth and Immigration to New Zealand
Archibald Scott Cleghorn was born in Edinburgh Scotland on November 15, 1835. Most accounts say he and his parents immigrated to New Zealand in the 1840's.

Immigration to Hawaii
When Archibald Cleghorn was about 16, he sailed from Auckland, New Zealand to Honolulu on the British ship "sisters" with his parents. His father started a small store, which run by Archibald after his father died. His mother returned to New Zealand, but he remained in business Hawaii, opening new stores on Oahu and other islands.

His Marriage to Elizabeth Lapeka
His first marriage was to local Hawaiian woman Elizabeth Lapeka, and they had three daughters together, Helen, Rose, and Annie. They lived in a home on Queen Street in downtown Honolulu.

His Marriage to Princess Likelike
After his first wife died Archibald Cleghorn married Miriam Likelike. He was between 35 and 37 years old at the time and she was about 19. Miriam became a princess when her brother, David Kalakaua became the King of Hawaii in 1874. Miriam's sister Lydia Liliuokalani became queen When King Kalakaua died.

The Birth of Princess Kaiulani
Princess Victoria Kaiulani, daughter of Archibald Cleghorn and Miriam Likelike was born on October 16, 1875. When she was born Princess Kaiulani was second in line to the thrown of Hawaiiand when her uncle King Kalakaua died in ? she became the crown princess of Hawsaii.

His Career in Hawaii
When his wife's brother King Kalakaua became king he was apointed to the House Nobles and when Oahu governor John Dominis died in 1891 Queen Liluokalani appointed him governor of oahu.

His Role in Founding Kapiolani Park
He served as vice president and president of the Kapiolani Park Association and he planned the landscaping of the Waikiki park that wss founded in 1877. He planted the ironwood trees that line Kalakaua Avenue today.

His Home on Queen Emma Street
When he was married to Elizabeth Lapeka, and for the first part of this marriage to Princess Kaiulani, he lived at his home on Queen Emma Street in Honolulu. He had always had a love and talent for horticulture and he planted beautiful gardens around his Queen Emma Street home. He turned his Emma Street home over to the Pacific Club after he began living at his Ainahau estate full time.

His Ainahau Estate
Some acocunts say Archibald Cleghorn purchased his Ainahau estate in 1872 for $300 but most accounts say it was given to his daughter Princess Kaiulani by her godmother Princess Ruth, when the tiny princess was baptized. He built a two story home at Ainahau and he lavishly landscaped the grounds. At first he used it as a country retreat but eventually he and his family lived there full time.

Cleghorn Family Deaths at Ainahau
Cleghorn's wife princess Likelike died at Ainahai on February 2, 1887 at age 36. His daughter Princess Kaiulani died there when she was about 23. He died himself at Ainahau, of heart failure, on November 1, 1910. Several months before he died he witness the relocation of the bodies of Princesses Likilike and Kaiulani to crypts in the Royal Mausoleum. He was buried next to them.

His Last Will and Testament
Archibald Cleghorn left his Ainahau estate to the city of Honolulu, with instructions to turn it into a public park, but his gift was refused by the Hawaii Legislature in 1911 and 1913. Eventuall Ainahau was subdivided and sold to hotel and residential developers.
