Iao Valley
Maui, Hawaii

The Iao Valley is a beautiful natural area in the West Maui Mountains that is also an important cultural and historic site.

The Iao Valley has hiking trails, streams, pools, lush tropical vegetation, and lookout points. The United States Department of the Interior recognized the Iao Valley as a National Natural landmark in 1962.

In 1790 the "Battle of Kepaniwai" was fought in the Iao Valley. King Kamehameha I, in his quest to unite the Hawaiian Islands, defeated Maui's army during that fierce battle.
