The summit of Mount Haleakala is a very desirable location for ground based telescopes because of its elevation, the absence of lights from major cities, and the dryness and stillness of its air. Because of this an astrophysical research center has been developed at the summit of Mount Healeakala that is operated by the University of Hawaii, the Smithsonian Institution, and the United States Government.
