Maui's Secret Hideaways: Bed and Breakfast on Maui
The legendary resorts and hotels of Maui County continue to win accolades
and top awards around the world, providing guests the ultimate in deluxe
service and amenities, while Maui's range of quality, mid-priced hotels
and condominiums make the Magic Isle's charms affordable to anyone,
whatever their budget.
But now, Bed and Breakfast inns are offering a lovely new way to experience
the warmth, hospitality, and true "aloha" of Maui's people. While more and
more of these B&Bs are scheduled to open on Maui in the coming months and years,
today a "lucky seven" of the very best are available to choose from -- each
wonderfully unique, each reflecting the owners' tastes and personality, each
very different in setting and atmosphere. Upcountry in the cool, green,
rolling meadows of Ulupalakua, with spectacular panoramic views, the Silver
Cloud Guest Ranch is a 12-room B&B that operates year-round. Owners Mike and
Theresa Gerry offer a variety of rooms on their nine acres of pure Maui country,
all with private baths, all tastefully decorated and immaculately clean. The
Plantation Home has six guest bedrooms; its grand living room boasts a
fireplace and the kitchen is big enough for many guests to use at once. The
Paniolo Bunkhouse contains five small apartments, each with a kitchen, while
the Lana`i Cottage -- the honeymoon suite -- has its own kitchen and
wood-stove. Breakfast is served for all guests in the garden sunroom of the
Plantation Home. Rates start at $85 - $150 per night (plus tax) including
breakfast.
On Maui's picturesque North Shore, the Kuau Cove Plantation in Paia has the
charm of an old Hawaiian plantation home and the privacy of a European villa.
Its 3/4-acre grounds are nestled behind an 8-foot vine-covered wall and shaded
by two giant Monkey Pod trees and a rubber tree, and are just a short walk from
a secluded ocean cove lined with coconut palms. The 1939 doctor's residence
has been renovated by owner Fred Fox to like-new condition, and furnished with
antiques and period-faithful wicker and rattan. There are two large bedrooms
in the main house, each with private bath, queen size bed and ceiling fans.
There are also two large studio apartments with private bathrooms and kitchens,
special amenities and views. Rates begin at $85 - $95 a night (plus tax) for
two people, including full continental breakfast.
Across the island in sunny Kihei is Maui -- What A Wonderful World. Anyplace
as happily named has to be sure of pleasing its guests, and if the reviews from
satisfied customers are any indication Eva and Jim Tantillo have every reason
to be confident. The Tantillo's Hawaiian-style pole home offers two spacious
one-bedroom suites and one studio suite (the suites have cooking facilities),
plus a Master bedroom. All have private entrance and bath, in-room phone service
with free local calls, air conditioning, TV/VCR, coffee maker and coffee supplies.
In the garden, there's a hot tub, BBQ grill, and lounging area. Kihei's famous
beaches are just a leisurely stroll away, and the Tantillos give you chairs,
coolers, towels, boogie boards... everything you need. Rates begin at $65 per
night (plus tax), and include a full breakfast every morning.
Four of our lucky seven Bed & Breakfasts are in West Maui: Blue Horizons,
The GuestHouse, Garden Gate and House of Fountains.
At The GuestHouse, situated in a quiet residential area between Lahaina and
Kaanapali, you awaken every morning to the scents of fresh Hawaiian coffee
and homemade bread, then arise to enjoy tropical fruits as your host prepares
French toast or banana pancakes. Each of the four deluxe-appointed suites
features a queen bed (three of the suites also have an extra twin bed), private
jacuzzi or hot tub, air conditioning, color TV with remote, ceiling fan, room
refrigerator, private phone and private Lana`i. The house also has a BBQ and
kitchen for preparing meals and snacks, swimming pool, living room and a family
room with video, picnic and beach supplies. Owner Tanna Branum is a certified
Divemaster, and host Tammy Djoa speaks German, French, Dutch, Indonesian...and
English. Rates begin at $89 a night (plus tax) for two people, including breakfast;
$85 a night for a single.
Blue Horizons is located between the resorts of Kaanapali and Kapalua. An
"upscale," two-story home with lush landscaping, BBQ grill, lap pool and a
beach just a 5-minute stroll away, its views of the Pacific and the islands
of Moloka`i and Lana`i are truly breathtaking. Owners Bev and Jim Spence
offer two large suites, one studio suite, and one guest room. All have air
conditioning, color TV, private bath, and all have use of the main living
areas and screened Lana`i. The two large suites each feature a queen bed,
private living area with queen sofabed, private kitchenette with stove and
refrigerator, and VCR. The Studio suite has two twin beds that can link to
become a king, plus a double futon, and a private kitchen with stove and
small refrigerator. The guest room has a queen bed and small refrigerator.
Rates begin at $75 (plus tax) including breakfast.
On a West Maui mountainside overlooking historic Lahaina, owners Thomas and
Daniela Clement's House of Fountains is a spacious, recently remodeled, 7,000
square foot residence with panoramic ocean and sunset views. The six guest
rooms are all meticulously furnished island-style, and all include queen bed,
private bath with shower, hair dryer, TV/VCR, air conditioning, ceiling fan
and mini-refrigerator. Four of the larger units include sofa beds, and five
of the six rooms have outside access. The large, friendly house is full of
amenities -- like an inviting swimming pool with slide, separate jacuzzi,
well-equipped BBQ area and expansive Lana`i with scenic view. Facilities
for your convenience include outdoor showers and beach towels and mats.
Your day begins with a full complimentary breakfast in the main dining room
or on the terrace, and rates begin at $85 per night (plus tax).
The Garden Gate B&B, owners Ron and Welmoet Glover's pride and joy, is set
in a secluded neighborhood in Lahaina, two blocks from the beach. Their
lovely tropical garden is graced by a small stream and waterfall, banana and
guava trees and fragrant native flowers, with a hot tub and wind chimes to
complete the ambiance. There are two traditional B&B rooms in the house,
one with sweeping ocean views, a private bath, private entrance and deck,
and both with queen bed, small refrigerator, fan and air conditioning, and
TV and phone available in the main house. There is also a large Garden
Studio with its own entrance, Lana`i, sitting area, kitchen, private bath,
queen bed and sleeper sofa, TV/VCR, fan and air conditioning, library and
phone. Perfect for honeymooners. Rates begin at $55 per night (plus tax)
including breakfast.
Historic Wailuku Town is the home of one of Maui's newest B&B's. The Hawaiian
name "Ulupono" means "to grow and flourish in righteousness." And although
the name is new, the feeling at the lovingly resorted Old Wailuku Inn at
Ulupono is most definitely that of Hawaii as it used to be. The sense of
history and sense of place are unmistakable. Innkeepers Tom and Janice
Fairbanks offer seven guest rooms decorated in 1930s-1940s Hawaiiana.
Full gourmet breakfast, business amenities and central location to Maui
attractions.
All of the B&Bs have far more to tell you about their properties than can
possibly be included here, and each owner has different policies about
deposits, cancellations, credit cards. So be sure to contact them directly
for complete information.
