Hawaii's Largest Coffee Plantation is on Kauai
There are hundreds of coffee farms on the Big Island
of Hawaii, and Kona coffee is famous around the world,
but many people do not realize that the largest coffee
plantation in Hawaii is located on the island of Kauai.
The Kauai Coffee Company is owned by Alexander & Baldwin
and they have been producing coffee on Kauai since 1987.

Four million coffee trees are grown on the Kauai
Coffee Company's 3400 acre estate on the south side of Kauai, near Koloa.
The estate produces more then 3.5 million pounds of beans a year,
which is more then half of Hawaii's total coffee production.
The company
processes their own coffee using their processing
plant in Numila. The Kauai Coffee Company is the largest coffee
plantation in the United States and the largest
drip-irrigated coffee plantation in the world.
History of the Kauai Coffee Company
The Kauai Coffee Company Estate was originally the
McBryde Sugar Company Plantation, which was one
of the first sugar growers in Hawaii. Alexander
& Baldwin, owner of Maui Brand Sugar, took over the
plantation in 1987 and began growing coffee alongside the sugar cane. In 1995 the sugar cane crop
was phased out, and in 1996, for the first time,
the amount of coffee harvested on Kauai exceeded
the amount of coffee produced by the entire Big Island
Kona region.
Coffee Varieties Grown on the Estate
Yellow Catuai, Red Catuai, Kauai Blue
Mountain, Mundo Novo, and Typica.
Kauai Coffee Visitors Center
The visitor center at the Kauai Coffee Company
plantation is open seven days a week from 9:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m. There are no walking tours of the
plantation, but at the visitor center you can view
videos and learn all about coffee production and
the history of the Kauai Coffee Company.
Location of the Kauai Coffee Estate
The Kauai Coffee Company is located about 17 miles
from the Lihue Airport on the southwest side of Kauai,
between Poipu and Hanapepe, near Koloa and the Port Allen Small
Boat Harbor. Take highway 50 to highway 540 and follow
the signs to the visitors center.
