How to Plan a Trip to Hawaii

One of the best ways to plan a trip to Hawaii is to select an attraction, activity, event, hotel, or island and use that as a focal point for planning your trip.

Which Hawaiian Island Should You Visit?
It is possible to stay overnight on any of the six largest islands in Hawaii. Oahu is the main Hawaiian island and that is where Waikiki and Honolulu are located and where 80% of Hawaii's population resides. Hawaii Island is the largest and Lanai Island is the smallest of the islands with visitor accommodations. The best island to visit will depend on what you want to do and see during your trip. Here are general descriptions of each of the Hawaiian islands and some of the most popular activities and attractions on each island.

Plan a Trip Around a Hawaii Attraction
Many people begin planning their trip to Hawaii by selecting the attractions they most want to see. Some of the most popular visitor attractions in Hawaii are Waikiki Beach, the USS Arizona Memorial, and the Polynesian Cultural Center on the island of Oahu, Volcanoes National Park, the Kohala Coast, and Hilo Town on the Big Island of Hawaii, Haleakala Crater, the road to Hana, and Lahaina Town on the island of Maui, and the Na Pali Coast, the Fern Grotto, and Waimea Canyon on the island of Kauai. There are hundreds of wonderful visitor attractions in Hawaii. Something for everybody!

Plan a Trip Around a Hawaii Event
My favorite way to plan a trip to Hawaii is to select an event I'd love to attend and plan my timing, activities, and lodging around it. I love Hawaiian music so I often plan trips around music festivals, concerts, contests, and awards shows, but you could also plan a trip around one of Hawaii's many festivals, holiday celebrations, sports events (either to watch or participate), street parties, theater performances, or other events. There's always something happening in Hawaii. Check out our Hawaii Event Calendar for more information.

Plan a Trip Around a Hawaii Activity
Another great way to plan a trip to Hawaii is to select some activities you love and visit the best places in Hawaii for pursuing those activities. Whether you love sightseeing, water sports, golfing, shopping, hiking, museums, nightlife, spas, playing chess, flirting, or just laying around in the sun, you'll have the most fun if you plan your trip with those activities in mind.

Plan a Trip Around a Hawaii Hotel
One way to plan a trip to Hawaii is to first find a hotel or other style lodging you would love to try. Would you prefer a busy tourist hotel with lots of activities or a smaller but charming boutique hotel? Are you looking for a reasonably priced, family-friendly condominium? Do you want the cheapest accommodations available or are you looking forward to blowing out all the stops at one of Hawaii's most luxurious high end resorts? Do you want to avoid the city? Selecting a place to stay is sometimes the best way to start planning your Hawaiian vacation.

Dining in Hawaii
If you love dining out, either at fine dining establishments or hole-in-the wall cafes you might get your trip planning inspiration from Hawaii's interesting variety of restaurants, cafes, farm tours, ethnic communities, farmer's markets, and food tours.
