Army Facilities in Hawaii
Fort Shafter
Fort Shafter is the Headquarters of the United States Army
Pacific Command, which includes army forces in Asia and
the Pacific Basin. Construction of the fort began in
1905, making it more then 100 years old and the oldest
military base on the island of Oahu. The Palm Circle
National Historic Landmark is located on the grounds of
Fort Shafter.
Schofield Barracks
This 17,725 acre army base is located across
Lake Wilson from Wahiawa and it is named after
Lieutenant General John McAllister Schofied,
the U.S. Secretary of War who recommended
establishing a naval ase at Pearl Harbor after
he visited Hawaii in 1872. Schofield Barracks
has been the home of the 25th Infantry Division
(aka the "Tropic Lightning") since 1941.
The Tropic Lightning Museum is located in
a historic building on the grounds of
Schofield Barracks.
Tripler Army Medical Center
This large, bright pink colored hospital on a hill
overlooking Honolulu was built and officially
dedicated on September 10, 1948. Tripler
Hospital was established in 1907 but at that time
is was housed in several wooden buildings
on the grounds of Fort Shafter.
Army Divisions and Commands in Hawaii
25th Infantry Division aka "Tropic Lightning"
The Army division known as "Tropic Lightning"
was activated in Hawaii on October 1, 1941 as
part of a build-up of a mobilization and
stregnth build-up in anticipation of the United
States entry into World War II. The division
fought in World War II, the Korean War, the
Vietnam War. The 25th Infantry Division is
parimarily used for operations in the Pacific
Region but some of them also fought
in Afghanistan and Iraq.
25th Infantry Division Association
This association of members and former members
of the 25th Infantry "Tropic Lightning" Division
of the U.S. Army was formed in 1949 by World
War II Veterans. Their Web site features
A detailed history of the organization's activities,
vintage photos, a memorabilia shop, information about
the different units of the division, and more.
U.S. Army Pacific Command (USARPAC)
The juristiction of the Army component of the United States
Pacific Command includes Hawaii, Alaska, Japan,
and the Pacific Ocean region, and it also performs
missions in other parts of Asia. USARPAC has also
participated in humanitarian missions different parts
of the world.
Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC)
The Joint POW/MIA Account Command is based
on the Island of Oahu and their mission is to
arrange for the return of U.S. military personnel
who are prisoners of war and obtain the fullest
possible accounting of all military reported as
missing in action. JPAC was activated October
1, 2003 when two former organizations merged:
The "U.S. Army Central Identification Laboratory
of Hawaii" and the "Joint Task Force Full Accounting".
