Memorial Day in Hawaii
Information about observing Memorial Day in
Hawaii including special events on all of the islands.
Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May in the United States
and it is a day set aside to honor the memory
of the men and women who died fighting in the
United States armed forces. Memorial Day is typically
observed by placing flags on graves and tossing flowers
in the water to honor those who died at sea.
Donate a Lei for Memorial Day
Every year on Memorial Day fifty thousand fresh flower lei
are placed on the graves of veterans at the National Cemetery
of the Pacific in Honolulu and at veterans' cemeteries on
several of the Hawaiian Islands.
Fifty thousand fresh lei are needed by Friday, May 25, 2007.
They can be dropped off at designated fire stations and other

Oahu Memorial Day Weekend Celebrations
National Roll Call of Honor
U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka will be the keynote speaker at
the National Roll Call of Honor at the Punchbowl National Cemetery of the Pacific
on Sunday May 27, 2007 at 10:00 am. Sponsored by the Pacific American
Foundation.
Hawaii Veterans Cemetery Grave Decoration
On Sunday May 27, 2007 at 12:30 pm the Girl Scouts will begin decorating
each of the nearly 6000 graves at the Hawaii Veterans Cemetery in
Kaneohe with a small United States flag and a lei.
Punchbowl Cemetery Grave Decoration
On Sunday, May 27, 2007 at 1:00 pm the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts
will begin decorating each of the graves in Punchbowl Cemetery
with a small United States flag and a lei.
Rolling Thunder
On Sunday May 27, 2007 at 5:30 pm the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle
Club and other motorcycle clubs in Hawaii will meet at Kakaako
Park and travel to Punchbowl Cemetery where they will place two
twenty-five foot lei on the walls of the Court of the Missing.
Memorial Day Eve Candlelight Ceremony
There will be a Memorial Day Eve Candlelight Ceremony
on Sunday, May 27, 2007 at 6:00 pm in Punchbowl Cemetery.
Rear Admiralty Van Alford Jr, Pacific Command Chief of
Staff will be the keynote speaker. The ceremony will
end with 1000 candles being lit in remembrance of
military personnel from all countries still missing
in action.

Mayor's Punchbowl Memorial Day Ceremony
The Mayor of Honolulu , Mufi Hannemann, will host
the 58th annual Mayor's Memorial Day Service in
Punchbowl Cemetery at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, May 28, 2007.
One of the guest speakers will be Pearl Harbor Survivor Ray Emery
and the Marine Corp Band will play.

Schofield Barracks Memorial Day Ceremony
On Monday, May 28, 2007 at 11:30 am there will be a Memorial
Day Ceremony at the Schofield Barracks Post Cemetery
presented by the U.S. Army Garrison of Hawaii.
Governor's Memorial Day Ceremony
Governor Linda Lingle will speak at the annual Governor's
Day Memorial Service at the Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery
in Kaneohe on Monday, May 28 2007 at 1:15 pm.
Magic Island Lantern Floating Ceremony
The 9th annual Memorial Day Lantern Floating Ceremony will
take place at Monday, May 28, 2007 at 6:30 pm in
Honolulu's Ala Moana Park.
the event honors ancestors
and loved ones who have passed away. More then 1000
candle lit lanterns will be floated away from shore.
Prayer requests can be made at the park between 1:00 and
6:00 pm.
Waikiki Beachboys Annual Paddle Out
Every year on Memorial day the beachboys
of Waikiki paddle out to sea with friends,
family, and current and past residents of
Hawaii in memory of loved ones whose ashes
have been sprinkled into the sea anywhere in the world.
The event typically takes place beet wen
9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. in Waikiki beach
Riders mount a photo and the name of their
loved one on a surfboard and paddle in a group
out to sea.
Military Memorials on Oahu
Photos and information about the USS Arizona Memorial,
the National Cemetery of the Pacific, the Hawaii
State Veterans Memorial, the Hawaii Korean War Memorial,
the Hawaii Vietnam War Memorial, and many other military
and war memorials in Hawaii. Many of Hawaii's Memorial
day events and ceremonies will be take place at these
memorials.
Wahiawa Pineapple Festival
This is not a Memorial Day ceremony but
it is happening over Memorial Day Weekend.
The 2007 Wahiawa Pineapple Festival will take place
on Saturday, May 26, 2007 and it will feature
live entertainment, a pineapple theme baking contest,
old plantation games, free narrated trolley rides through Wahiawa, historical
and educational displays, a country store, children's
activities, a pineapple dipping station and
chocolate fountain and pineapple theme dishes prepared
by some of Hawaii's top chefs.
