Hawaii Film Festivals

Information and articles about local and international film festivals in Hawaii, including the Hawaii International Film Festival, the Maui Film Festival, and the Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival.

Hawaii International Film Festival
The Hawaii International Film Festival it is the premier United States showcase for Asian and other Pacific Rim films. It was founded in 1980 by the East-West Center, a cultural exchange education and research facility based at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. During the festival Films are screened on several Hawaiian islands and the event draws more then 60,000 visitors from around the world. Events include features an Oscar night party, a Spring Showcase (founded in 1998), the K-Fest screening of Korean films in the summer, and the main film festival in the fall, which is sponsored by Louis Vuitton. In 2002 the HIFF signed an agreement to become a sister event with the Shanghai Film Festival, in order to exchange movies, information, and marketing efforts.

    Big Island Film Festival
    This festival of independent narrative films will take place May 18-21, 2006 . The festival will take place at three Waikoloa venues, and there will be screenings of general feaure films, family films, surfing films, short subjects, and student films

    Maui International Film Festival
    The 6th annual Maui Film Festival took place in June of 2005 and it screened more then 60 films at theaters in Wailea and Kahului. The 7th Maui Film Festival will take place June 14-18, 2006.

    Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival
    An annual film festival produced by the Honolulu Gay and Lesbian Cultural Foundation. The festival typically takes place in the spring. Entry fees are waived for Hawaii based film-makers. The festival was originally known as the Adam Baran Honolulu Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. The 2006 HRFF will be the 17th annual event and it will take place in May at the Honolulu Academy of Arts Theatre.
