| Hawaiian Grammy Concert in Manhattan Beach |
 |
|
Something very exciting is happening in Southern
California on February 7, 2009, the day before the
winner of the Hawaiian Music Grammy Award is
announced. A group of Grammy nominees are
presenting a workshop and performing a pre-Grammy
Hawaiian music concert at a church in Manhattan
Beach. If you don't live in Southern California, this
event is worth flying in for. The incredible lineup of
performers includes the legendary Richard Hoopii,
George Kahumoku, Jr, Dennis Kamakahi, Sonny Lim,
Owana Salazar, Daniel Ho, Bobby Ingano, and Keoki
Kahumoku. Call 888-669-3858 early to order tickets
because the event is sure to sell out quickly. I will be
there for sure!

| Meet My 101 Year Old Ukulele Teacher |
 |
|
My friends cannot believe my ukulele teacher is more
then 100 years old. I see Bill
Tapia every Saturday morning and I can
hardly believe it myself. Every week he writes out all of
my lessons BY HAND, filling several pages of music
paper with notes and chords. I am most interested in
learning to play Hawaiian style ukulele, and Bill is
more of a jazz musician, but I have to say, the difficult
chords and transitions he is making me learn should
give me a great foundation for playing any kind of
music.
And now
I want to share something very special... Photos of Bill Tapia's 101st Birthday
Party

A Note from Kathie |

Since this is issue #2 of my newsletter you
might be wondering what happened to Issue #1.
Well... by the time that issue was ready to send, I
already had enough time-sensitive material for
another newsletter. I decided to post the first one
online and only email the
second issue. You can
read our inaugural issue here:
Issue 2009-01
I'm flying to Honolulu in a few hours, and I'll probably
be there a week or so. I'm flying over for the Breathe
Concert at the Hawaii Theatre on January 31. I
thought I'd share some of the music venues where
you can often find me, if I'm not otherwise occupied,
when I'm in Honolulu. SUNDAY - Henry Kapono and
Lopaka Colon at Duke's Waikiki and later George
Kuo, Martin Pahinui, and
Aaron Mahi at the Marriott Waikiki - FRIDAY -
Maunalua at
Duke's Waikiki and
later Jerry Santos at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Tapa
Bar - THURSDAY - Genoa Keawe Ohana at the
Marriott Waikiki and Chiko's Tavern if Hoku
Zuttermeister is playing that week. I also show up at
Chai's Island Bistro for dinner and music, the Hyatt to
hear Sean Naauao, sometimes Hy's to say hello to
Audy Kimura, and Tiki's to hear Vaihi, Weldon
Kekauoha, Ellsworth Simiona, Johnny Helm, and
others. Tiki's music is typically not so traditional but it's
always a fun place and the performers are great.
I probably sound like a total barfly, but the
truth is, I only hang out at places like that in Hawaii,
and only because that's where the music is. If
the music was at Chuck E. Cheese I'd be hanging out
there instead. Sometimes my friends tease me by
calling me a Hawaiian music groupie. They are
sooooo right, but I'm not (seriously not) the kind of
groupie who wants to sleep with everybody. I'm the
kind who wants to hear them sing, take their picture,
and tell the rest of the world about them!
