2006 Hawaiian Culture Awards
In May of 2006, the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) announced
the fourteen recipients of their 2006 Hawaiian Culture Program Awards.
2006 Hawaiian Culture Award Recipients
Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement
PROJECT: Makahiki Program
DESCRIPTION: An effort to formally recognize
the Hawaiian
Makahiki season.
The program will include research with cultural practitioners
and native Hawaiian organizations about Makahiki, establishment of a
working group to develop an annual event, and other educational
activities.
Hawaii Island Economic Development Board
PROJECT: The Hawaiian Music Conference Series
DESCRIPTION: A series of conferences about the music of Hawaii featuring
professional and master Hawaiian music makers. The conferences will have
workshops where masters will share their techniques and ideas about what
makes a song Hawaiian, and information about writing, publishing,
protecting and copy writing music.
Hawaii Theater Center
PROJECT: Hawaiian Performing Arts Program
DESCRIPTION: A program to perpetuate Hawaiian music and hula and to
nurture the Hawaiian music industry. Performances will take place
at the Hawaii Theatre Center.
Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association
PROJECT: Sailing Canoe Program
DESCRIPTION: This program offers activities (e.g.,
clinics, educational activities, and Hawaiian sailing canoe races)
for visitors and residents throughout the State.
Hui Makua o Kawaiahao
(no Web site)
PROJECT: E Malama I Ke Kai Ocean Festival
DESCRIPTION: An annual ocean awareness
festival scheduled for June 2006 at Kapiolani Park on Oahu to promote
public awareness of caring for the ocean and its surrounding environment
and perpetuation of the Hawaiian culture.
Cultural Learning Center at Kaala
PROJECT: E Ao Mai Ka Aina: Lessons Learned from the Land
DESCRIPTIOIN: Cultural Learning Program brings visitors and residents
(including Hawaii youth) to Kaala Farm’s Cultural Learning Center in
Waianae Valley for educational experiences focusing on Hawaiian
culture and traditions.
Kauahea
PROJECT: Hawaiian Cultural Practices Institute and Incubator for
Practitioners.
DESCRIPTION: This project supports training programs for cultural
practitioners on topics including history, genealogy and chant.
Kauai Museum Association
PROJECT: 26th Annual May Day Lei Contest scheduled to be held
on Kauai in May 2006.
Kona Historical Society
PROJECT: Kona Heritage Ranch - Oral Histories of Paniolo.
DESCRIPTION: This project includes production of video and audio documentation
of oral histories which will serve as the foundation for creating
programs to showcase Hawaiian paniolo at the Kona Heritage Ranch.
Na Pali Coast Ohana
PROJECT: E Kukulu I Ka PaePae
DESCRIPTION: Restoration of Stone Wall and
Halau at Na Pali State Park. This project supports efforts to
manage the natural and cultural resource of Na Pali State Park
through the rebuilding of the stone walls and a halau along the
visitor trail.
Pai Foundation
PROJECT: 4th Annual Hapa Haole Hula Festival.
DESCRIPTION: This event brings
musicians, dancers and scholars together to showcase the music and
dance of this Hawaiian genre.
Pasifika Foundation Hawaii
PROJECT: Development of Community Based Host-Visitor Program and
Tourism Model
DESCRIPTION: This project includes the development of a Hawaii
model for a community based host-visitor program by sharing
information and bringing together tourism representatives and
experts in indigenous tourism initiatives from Hawaii and the
Pacific region.
Tri-Isle Resource Conservation and Development Council
PROJECT: Halawa Farms -Restoration of Taro and Tour Program
DESCRIPTION: This project supports the integration of agri-tourism
and cultural tourism activities as part of the Halawa Valley tour.
YWCA
PROJECT: Kokokahi Cultural Learning Center
DESCRIPTION: This project supports
the planning and development of Kokokahi Cultural Learning Center on
Oahu as a place where the Hawaiian culture can be lived and practiced
daily.

The 2006 HTA Hawaiian Culture award winners
were selected based on criteria designed to address
the goals and objectives identified in the Hawaii Tourism Strategic
Plan: 2005-2015 for the HTA's Hawaiian Culture initiative.
The objectives included: strengthening the relationship between
the visitor industry and the Hawaiian community, nurturing the
Hawaiian culture by creating visitor experiences, activities and
marketing programs that are respectful and accurate; and supporting
Hawaiian programs and cultural practitioners, craftsmen, musicians,
and other artists that preserve and perpetuate the Hawaiian culture.
Through HTA’s Hawaiian Culture Program, one-to-one matching funds
were provided to business and organizations that honor and perpetuate
the Hawaiian culture and community.
"Our Hawaiian Culture Program not only supports efforts to preserve
and sustain the Hawaiian culture, but is also intended to build
partnerships and increase collaboration between Hawaii’s visitor
industry and the Native Hawaiian community," said Rex Johnson,
HTA president and chief executive officer. "Through this initiative,
we are proud to support programs and activities that provide both our
visitors and residents with the opportunity to experience our unique
host culture, history and our way of life. Those are the attributes
that set Hawaii apart from all other places."
The
Hawaii Tourism Authority was created in 1998 to
promote and sustain Hawaii's visitor industry well into
the future. Its mission is to manage the growth of Hawaii's
visitor industry in a manner consistent with economic goals,
cultural values, preservation of natural resources,
and community interests.
