Chinese Immigration to Hawaii

Information about the first Chinese immigrants in Hawaii including where they came from and why they moved to Hawaii.

The first 200 Chinese contract laborers arrive from Amoy, Fukien, China, aboard the ship Thetis on January 3, 1852. Most of them were single men.

More then 25,000 Chinese workers immigratee to Hawaii to work on sugar plantations between 1852 and 1884. When their contracts ended, many of them left the plantations to form their own businesses and farms.

In 1883 the Kingdom of Hawaii limited Chinese immigrants to 600 per three month period.
