Town of Laupahoehoe

The town of Laupahoehoe is located on a low peninsula on the north coast of the big island of Hawaii, about halfway between Honokaa and Pepeekeo and 11 miles north of Hilo. Laupahoehoe is 35 square miles in size.

Laupahoehoe Train Museum
A community run museum honoring the history of the Hilo Railroad, which was founded in 1988 and ran until 1946 when the tracks were destroyed by a devastating tidal wave. Located on Highway 19 near mile marker 25.

Laupahoehoe Point Park
Pictures of the grassy park run by the County of Hawaii which is located at Laupahoehoe Point. There is a monument in the park dedicated to the 24 teachers and students who were killed by a tidal wave on April 1, 1946 that destroyed their school.

Laupahoehoe Point Lighthouse
The original Laupahoehoe Point lighthouse was a wooden trestle beacon built in 1890. In 1915 it was replaced by a 32 foot tall concrete tower, and when that one was destroyed by a tidal wave in 1947, it was replaced by a 36 foot tall wooden skeleton tower. the present lighthouse tower was built in 1975.

Seascape Land Vacation Suite
A room for rent in the home of Laupahoehoe artists Susan and Doug Ball. Art workshops can be arranged on request. Use of kayaks and beach supplies are included. Room has a private bathroom and lanai. Two night minimum charge. I'm not sure if breakfast is served and I'm not sure of the size of the bed, so check before booking.

Laupahoehoe High and Elementary School
A school in the town of Laupahoehoe for school children from kindergarden through 12th grade, with more then 30 teachers and about 260 students.

Laupahoehoe Volunteer Fire Department
A group of local residents and professional fire fighters in the town of Laupoehoe. Web site includes the history of their organization and photos of their equipment.
