Telescopes and Observatories in Hawaii
Information about observatories, telescopes,
and astronomical research stations in Hawaii, including
those on the Big Island's Mauna Kea, Maui's
Haleakala, and observatories on the islands of Kauai and Oahu.
Mauna Kea Observatory
This complex of telescopes is located
on the Big Island of Hawaii,
on top of 14,000 foot Mount Mauna Kea. This is the largest
astronomical observatory in the world with
telescopes operated by astronomers from the
University of Hawaii, the California
Institute of Technology, the National Aeronautics
and Space Administration, the National Science
Foundation, the Smithsonian Institute, Argentina,
Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, France,
Japan, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom. Some
of the Mauna Kea telescopes and observatories are:
VISITOR INFORMATION: If you wish to visit the Mauna Kea Observatory
you should contact the Visitor Information Station
of the Onizuka Center for International Astronomy,
located at the 9,000 foot level on the Mauna Kea
access road. You can also drive to the top on
a steep unpaved road, but there a restrictions
that must be observed by visitors and you will not
be able to look through any telescopes.
Haleakala Observatory
This telescope complex is located on the island of Maui,
about 10,000 feet above sea level, on top
of Mount Haleakala, a volcano that is currently
classified as Dormant. Haleakala telescopes and observatories include:
Note that is is not possible to visit the observatories
and telescopes on top of Haleakala.
KEASA Observatory and Starwatching Group
The Kauai Educational Association for Science and Astronomy
is an organization established in 1989
to provide activities and information
to young people and adults on the island
of Kauai who are interested in astronomy.
The organization operates an observatory
on the Pacific Missile Range Facility which is
located in the town of Mana on the leeward side of the island.
the group also meets for monthly starwatching
sessions in Kaumakani.
Lanihuli Observatory
This radio observatory is located at Windward Community
College in the town of Kaneohe on the
east side of the island of Oahu.
It receives radio noise bursts from Jupiter and the sun.
The Windward College radio observatory is part of NASA's Radio Jove project.
Leeward College Observatory
An astronomical observatory used for research
and education located at Leeward Community College
in Pearl City on the south side of the island of Oahu.
