Articles and information about the life and career of award winning Hawaiian comedian Andy Bumatai. In addiition to doing stand-up comedy, Andy is an actor who has appeared many times on stage, television, and film.

Hawawiian-Filipino comedian Andy Bumatai was born on December 24, 1954 (or was it 1953?) second in a family of six kids. His older brother Ray Bumatai died in 2005, and he has two younger brothers, Benton Bumatai and Gabe Bumatai, and two sisters, Ramona Brosius and Heidi Bumatai

Andy decided to become a stand up comedian in 1977 at the age of 23, and his first job was playing between sets for Frank Delima at the Noodle Shop in Honolulu. For about a year after that he replaced Rap Reiplinger in the comedy group Booga Booga. After Andy returned to a solo career, he won a Hoku award in 1979 for "Most Promising New Artist", and he went on to win three more Hoku awards, for best comedy album, in 1995, 1981, and 1980.

Andy lived and worked in Los Angeles for about ten years, but he returned to Hawaii before his son started school, because he wanted his children to grow up in the islands. Andy studied acting while he lived in Los Angeles, and he had regular roles in the TV series "Raven" and "Marker". He also appeared in many other TV shows and several feature length films. Over time, Andy developed a keen interest in computers, telecommunications, and the Internet, and while he is still acting and performing stand-up comedy he is also the manager of Digital Hawaii, a company that designs Web pages and produces multimedia presentations, and he was vice president of Pacific Information Exchange.

Andy is married and his has two children. He was the second eldest of six children, and his older brother actor Ray Bumatai, died on October 6, 2005 at the age of 52, after a three year battle with brain cancer. Ray and Andy loved to work on their vintage Harley-Davidson motorcycles together, and they also acted together several times. For more information about Ray Bumatai see this October 2005 Honolulu Advertiser article.

I first heard Andy perform in Waikiki, very early in his career. I found his humor slightly shocking at first, but that was because I did not yet understand how much Hawaiians love to make fun of themselves and the different ethnic groups that are so much a part of Hawaiian culture. At first I kept watching the Japanese visitors when he was making fun of them, and the middle-America haole's when he was making fun of them, but soon I forgot about all of that, and found myself laughing hysterically along with all of the other locals in the audience. I laughed so hard there were tears in my eyes. If you have an opportunity to see Andy perform live, don't miss it!
