40,000 acres of forest on the Big Island have been designated by the State of Hawaii as experimental forests under a United States Forest Service program that includes more then 70 forests in other states. The two Big Island forests to be involved in the program are the wet Laupahoehoe Forest and the dry Puu Waa Waa Forest. The forests will be used to study conservation, ecology, native forest restoration, responsible harvesting, and invasive species control.
