The annual Haleakala Run to the Sun 36 mile ultra marathon will take place on March 25, 2006 on the island of Maui. The challenging course begins at sea level, at the Maui Mall in Kahului, and it climbs more then 10,000 feet to the summit of the dormant Haleakala volcano. 43 men and 17 women competed in 2005 and that year the first place finishers were Mark Speck of Hawaii (men) and Lisa Goldsmith of Colorado (women).
