The Coco Palms Hotel, made famous by the 1961 Elvis Presley movie "Blue Hawaii", was badly damaged when Hurricane Iniki struck Kauai in 1992, and since that time it has been abandoned and left to decay. In 2006 a major renovation project will begin, and the new Coco Palms is expected to be open for business in the winter of 2008. When the work is finished, the complex will have 104 hotel rooms and 200 condominium units. The lobby, restaurant, nightclub, and Hawaiian fishpond areas will be identical to those of the original Coco Palms Hotel. Bungalow 56, where Elvis Presley regularly stayed, will be restored and turned into an Elvis Presley museum. For more information see the Coco Palms Resort Web site.December 2005
